BILL M 217 - 2025
British Columbia has enacted the Dashboard Cameras in Commercial Vehicles Act (Bill M217), establishing mandatory forward-facing dashboard camera requirements for certain commercial vehicles. Bill M217 received Royal Assent on May 28, 2026.
The legislation applies to commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 11,793 kg (26,000 lbs.). The Act will come into force by regulation of the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
REQUIREMENTS:
Owner / Lessee
• The vehicle owner is responsible for installing and maintaining the required dashboard camera.
• For leased commercial vehicles, the lessee is responsible for installation and maintenance.
Vehicle / Camera Requirements
• Forward-facing recording through the vehicle's front windshield
• Continuous recording while the commercial vehicle is operating
• Minimum 1080p HD video resolution
• Minimum 72 hours of recording retention
• Night-vision capability
• Camera must not be obstructed or prevented from recording
• Recordings must comply with applicable privacy and security requirements, including British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)
